Smith Mountain Lake Fly-By

Featured Replies

I don't know if any of you were fishing on Smith Mountain Lake this morning, but that was me that flew over and scared all the fish away!

Seriously though, what a fun little airport. I love how the approach comes in right over the trees. From the looks of it from above, I need to go fishing at Smith Mountain Lake.

Haha I wish my little airplane could do that!

Back in the "good ole days" one could rent a Piper Cub or a Cessna 150 or 152 and fly over the waters you were going to fish to get a birds eye-view to help you plan your trip.

Today, with aviation fuel prices and the rental cost per hour being high this practice has stopped.

If you want to locate places to fish on SML or other bodies of water you can fly over on tournament days and map where the guys are fishing.

For a brief second when the camera went right straight up, I thought you just might have an after-burner after all.
