Baitcaster For Beginner

Featured Replies

Hey guys. I personally don't need a new baitcaster, my shimano, Abu and quantum are still going strong. This is for my brother. He has castes my older quantum a few times quite a while back, but I want to get him his own. I don't know if he will take to it or not, he expresses interest but I don't want to shell out a ton of cash. So what's a good but inexpensive setup? Left handed, 6 foot rod.

Go to Walmart and get one of theose budget Abu combos. They get a lot of good feedback.

I own several magnetic only reels. My suggestion is a reel with centrifugal brakes or dual brakes for a beginner because they should have less problems with backlashes. A magnetic brake reel such as a Zillion has proven to be rather easy to cast as well, but is a bit pricey. I have an STX...magnetic brake only...which hasn't been bad either, but I often read about problems with the SX, another mag brake only reel. An excellent casting reel according to many, but hard to set up right. I feel that a centrifugal brake reel is the best bet if you are looking at a low cost reel.

Look at the Citica 200D posted here. $50 reel that would be perfect for a beginner.

The Abu Garcia Black Max combos can be found as low as $70. It's a great starter baitcaster reel!
