Why Is The Classic Held In February?

Featured Replies

I know this may be a noob question but why do they do it in February? This years Classic the guys are launching in 30 degree weather, 10AM its only 40 degrees. Wouldnt it make more sense to hold it later? March or April when most of the country is in spawn or close to it. Why hold it in the coldest month of the year?

Well, i guess in the south that is the beginning of the spawn.

The 2012 Classic was won with 51# over three days and the 2011 with 69#, so they're doing OK in February.

2013 will be at Grand lake which is 50 miles from my house, but the weigh in will be in Tulsa whcih is about 90 miles, nevertheless I plan to attend one or more of the weigh ins. Hard to say what the weather will be like late Feb. when they will be there, it could be 20 degrees or it could be 60 degrees.

I remember when it was held in summer time. I might be wrong but I thought it was after the lousy weights in Chicago and the Pittsburg classics they moved it to the south and to the beginning of the year hoping to get bigger fish on film and at the weigh in. And it seemed to work for the most part the first couple years they did it. No complaints here though. Id like to see it in summer time again but long as they keepin having it ill keep watching.

I thought the Pittsburgh classic was one of the best as of late! Yes the weight was horrible but it showed you how good these guys really are! Also, the coverage was some of the best with lots of hours on espn and it was put together extremely well!

I agree totally. Probably just wasnt enough eye candy for em.

You certainly wouldn't want to be on Grand Lake this time of year. 107 degrees today.

My best guess is money. In February, most of the country is overcome with cabin fever and can't wait for fishing to get going. With the classic being one of the first events of the year, I imagine they get more viewers than if it was held during the middle of the tournament season when people had all sorts of other stuff going on. I don't know that for sure.

More viewers??? I thought the coverage was horrible. The coverage for the PGH Classic was one of the best. You could have had the PGH Classic during the spawn you wouldn't get FLA weights. It is the prespawn, the fish are the heaviest. Plus I think they are kinda copying NASCAR with the "Super Bowl" at the beginning of the season.

It has to do with all the equipment and boat companies. The Classic is a huge show for them to debut new products and advertise for the year. Icast is in July, so they would have anything new to show if the Classic was also in the summer. New stuff usually comes out at one or the other.
