8/1/12 Ne Pa Hawg! Guess Weight?

Recommended Posts

Caught this guy today around 3pm off a point in the dead sea. Brought her home on a ultra light spinning setup w/ 6lb fluroclear the fight was on! Good thing I had a net on board to boat her. I just purchased a Rapalla digital scale to with the stainless hook. I couldn't figure out where to put the hook and didn't want to keep the fish out of the water long so I release her without weighing. Anyone give me a solid guess on this one? Also some advice as to where to put the hook of the scale? I assume to gill plate but I've never even held a fish by the gills so I'm uncertain, I plan on buying the clamp addon so I don't have to deal with that and less risk of hurting the fish.

Same fish in both pics different angles.

Nice fish and congrats! The hook type scales should be placed under the gill plate, but not affecting the gills.

Really nice fish. Even better with the ultra light gear. What type lure were you using?

Yes it is, I've spoken to your husband about it on another forum ;) I stole the name from his threads over there.

That's about what it felt like. I wish I wasn't such a putz with the scale.

I say 3 to 4 lbs. tough to tell without a gut shot!

As far as the scale some use the gill plate.

Others pop it through the lip. Your bass has a dot on her lip right about there is the spot.

the dot is where people pop it through the lip or the proper place to gill hook it?

Great fish Sun Fish, WTG....

I think you found a new spot....

As for weighing, it's real easy. Put fish in a typical plastic bag you get from supermarket... hang bag and fish on scale.

Much less chance of fish flopping off, you don't need to worry about gills or finding a hole to hook it through.

I will do this, thanks Mat!

Nice fish, looks under five. As far as those scales go I sharpened the hook on mine and pierce the bass right on that dot. Everytime I go to weigh a bass hooked thru the gill plate, they shake there head they fall off.

Wait.... I take back what I said on the hook placement for the scale. Upon looking at the pic I was way off i apologize. I would not place the scale hook where the black dot is. I generally place it right underneath the bottom lip where you would thumb it.

I would poke it through in the general area of the dot. It is notmanexact science . Fish have bones, and then some thin soft spots..
