Anyone Use The 'scum Frog' Popper?

i just tried mine for the first time this morning. it was awesome! it was my frist time fishing this type of lure and it was really cool watching the bass hit it. i got like 5 or 6 strikes in 30-45 minutes. only problem is i only got one hook-up and that one ended up throwing the hook. being that im a newbie, my hookset probably leaves much to be desired. i tried waiting 2 seconds before setting like it said on the package but i just kept pulling it out of the fishes mouth. is the 2-second count enough or should i wait til i feel the weight of the fish?

i like that frog. some/many will tell you to "step up" to a more expensive one. but i find this one works well.

with any frog there will be some hook up issues. escpecailly when first starting out to frog fish.

the "wait 2-3 seconds" works as well as "feeling the weight of the fish"

hook set is a big key. as is what equipment you are using.

IMO you need at least a med hvy rod and braid works best for me.

once you land a few... you will be hooked on the frog....

it doesn't get much more exciting than that technique..

good luck..

The scum frog popper is a really good frog. Use braid and a heavy action rod and wait until you feel the fish before you set the hook.

I have been using a medium action rod this whole weekend and caught my PB and about 7 more. IMO you don't need to have a medium heavy action or heavy action rod. I only missed two and that was because I thought they got it and set the hook and it wasn't even in it's mouth. I used the Scum Bigfoot Green Red Flake and it worked fine till the hooks went through the humps. The hooks are to small for that thing. Repaired it with super glue and it worked but have to do it every trip when catching fish. I am going to try one of those popping frogs this weekend and see how it works. Good luck with your frog fishing. I am addicted! I wait 3 seconds, and it seems to be working for me.

thanks for the input. i was gonna go out again in the morning and give it another try but i think its supposed to thunderstorm. hopefully it'll hold off but if not i guess ill have to wait til next week.

Try and make it look like it's dieing. What I do to get the bass's attention is once it lands walk it for like 3 seconds then pop it once pretty hard but not hard enough to where it moves alot but just loud. When I do this I will actually see a bass or two start simming towards it.

I mainly use Spro frogs these days but that Scum Frog Popper is one heck of a fish producer. I learned to frog fish with the Scum Frog Popper several years ago and IMO there is no better frog to learn on for it flat out gets the strikes and IMO it is still the best choice for situations when the bass want a smaller profile frog. It lands upside down a lot, is a little harder to cast accurately with do to lack of weight and it does not hold up as well as the Spros IMO, but there is no arguing it is one heck of a fish producer and at $2.99 one can load up a tackle box with these frogs without breaking the bank.

As far as hookups go, one thing that I believe really helped me, other then using the right gear for the job, was that I started throwing the frog way before the sun comes up. Dark enough outside that you could not see the frog or the strike. What this did was force me to wait to feel the bass before setting the hook. It takes a bit to get use to and I would recommend doing such on a body of water that you know well, but I honestly believe such has made me a better frog fisherman and has helped to increase my hookup ratio. Fish slow, pop, pop pause and when you feel that fish, drive the hook home. Happy Frogin!!!
