Rigging A Frog

Featured Replies

I bought an assortment of soft plastic frogs to work topwater in my heavily weeded lakes. How should I rig these?

I am planning on using a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG Superline Gammy. Is this all I need and simple enough or should I try another type of hook, like an Owner Screw Lock with 4/0 or 5/0?

Not sure which way to go on this one.

That is all I use, the EWG, hook ups are no problem. Rig texas weightless just like any other soft plastic. I use zoom so it has the slot that helps you out keeping it all lined up. Others use the screw in or Stanley has the double "frog hook" screw in for soft plastic frogs.Honestly never used a screw lock but they might save them from tearing. You may want to pick up a pack and try them.

I've tried the stanley double frog, not much of a fan. Unless the frog your rigging is huge it just leaves too much hook exposed for heavy cover fishing.

So in other words my plan is good and will work just dandy.

Here you go, this works on them all... And screwlocks as well as weighted hooks work too, but maintaining the keeled shape of the Toad is most important to make it surface easily and stay on it's belly 100% of the time...

Good post Big-O and good replys.

Thanks for the replies, especially to Big-O. I will purchase a few 5/0 superline EWG later on today after work. My biggest concern was keeping the baits on their belly.

EWG will work just fine, but the screw in hooks are nicer I think. Neither will offer a different hook up ratio, but the screw in hooks don't tear as much. Bass hammer ribbit frogs, and tend to tear up the front of the bait.

Ok I have quick question on T-Rigging as well . . .

I was trying to t-rig a Fat Ika backwards last night using a 4/0 EWG and I either couldn't bend the bait enough to get a good fit or when I pushed the hook through, the neck caused a small hump in the plastic. Just seems odd that I cannot get these things rigged straight or without damaging a lot of plastic.
