How to Prevent Line Twists with Spinnerbaits?

Featured Replies

So do you guys have any tips on how to prevent line twists with spinnerbaits.  When I mean spinnerbaits, I mean the spinnerbaits like Mepps spinner.

I saw one method, bend the wire.  But wouldn't that cause the lure to swim differently and not function properly?

I think that maybe adding a snap swivel may help because the middle part allows you to spin it freely.

I need to find something, because I love trolling these lures in the lake near me.  Problem is they cause line twisting big time, especially when trolling.

A swivel takes care of it when im crappie fishing. There is still some twist, but it is way better

I bend the line tie of all my Roostertails (see photo) to reduce line twist, but only a bit - not to the degree shown in your photo. I also use a snap-swivel as well.

A quality ball-bearing swivel or snap swivel is your best bet.

You can bend the line tie loop to look like the old Shysters. They are not round they have an offset angle.

One question, Are you sure it's the lure that's making your line twist. I don't have a twist problem with these or any other spinners. It might be how you are spooling your reel. Spooling properly can eliminate about 80-90% of the wind knots. Another method would be to use a good line conditioner like KVD Line and Lure or Vicious Line Conditioner Are you throwing these with spinning gear or baitcasters?

No it is, I spool my line properly everytime on my spinning reel.

I don't get much line twists when I'm casting, little hear and there.

Trolling it's really bad, basically because you leave your line out and your lure is constantly twurling in the water.

I'm going to try out a snap swivel, hope this works this spring. I'll definitely try bending the top just a tad on one of them too, see which one works the best.

Thanks everyone for the help!

By the way, what happened to the shysters? Looks like a good spinnerbait, I hate when companies cancel out a great lure. For instance, I can't find any of my old favorite Bomber crankbait colors, ticks me off!

They're still being made http://www.luhrjensen.com/products/spoons--spinners/shyster but have limited distribution, limited sizes, and somewhat limited colors. The Shyster in my photo is one of my last two - I've had them about 45 years. One of these days I'll have to get a couple new ones ::)
