Phenix Recon 715 Vs. Powell Endurance 714

Featured Replies

So I am looking for a heavy powered rod and reading some threads I found out that this rod weighs only 3.65 ounces. I feel like that is extremely light for a rod of this type.

Is the Powell or Phenix a better rod for throwing jigs in cover, frogging, etc.

What is the general opinion between these two and heavy powered rods in the sub $200 price range?

I was at first set buying a Powell Max 704c, but now I am questioning if the phenix will be a better rod for throwing jigs in cover, frogging, etc.

Have you looked at the Powell Endurance rods? They make a 7'1" Heavy and that rod is amazing for 160 bones. I believe the Powell Endurance is better than the two rods you are mentioning. It has the smaller fuji aconite guides and its slightly lighter than the Max. Plus Powell gives you a lifetime warranty. It would be an ideal rod for throwing jigs/texas rigs/and frogging. You also have to think about how heavy the baits you are going to throw will be. The extra fast tip on the Powell only allows you to throw up to 1oz baits where as the fast action Phenix will allow you to throw a 1 1/2oz bait.

I would make your decision between the Endurance and the Phenix Recon not the Max.

Thank you, I had not seriously considered. Therefore, I changed the comparison. How much does the endurance weigh? And has anyone used the recon? I have not heard much about them.

I have the 715 (and 766) Recons The 715 is a nice rod, definitely on the lighter end of "Heavy" I throw 4.8" Keitech's on 3/8oz swimbait hooks, big spinnerbaits, some lighter flipping/footballs with it. I love the rod. It also uses the smaller than standard/bigger than micro guides.

The hook hanger is terrible in position and in choice. Mine fell apart then the leftover stub would nick me up a bit being at the bottom of the handle/grip. I took it off and threw on one of those Fuji one's that use an O-Ring. NOW it's nearly perfect.
