I have never caught a smallmouth bass. I have lived in Wisconsin and Alabama, and I'm 47 years old. I always thought I would catch one by accident (while fishing), but that hasn't happened. I am planning a vacation to the mountains of Tenn or NC at Thankgiving, and was wondering if anyone knew of a lake or river near/in the mountains area that would give me a good chance of a catch (anything that would be a legal fish). I was thinking Franklin, N.C., and the little tennessee river.

Any input or guides would be appreciated.

I live not far away in Bryson City, NC. If you keep me posted and want to go out on Fontana Lake to catch a smallmouth or two, I would be glad to take you. I have boat, gas and ready to go anytime! Depending on the weather conditions prior to and during, you can catch some smallies in the Tennessee River, I usually look for deep, slack pools right after current. Throw a super fluke jr or a small jerkbait in those areas. Ideal for numbers would be minnows and wading.
