How to make my hook up ratio better?

Featured Replies

I fish jigs/t rigged craws and have lots of hits but have yet to hook up on even ONE. How can i hook these fish? im switching to left hand reels is there anything else i can do?

Use sharper and thinner wire hooks.  If you have to use thicker gauge hooks try line with less stretch or use stronger mono to get a stronger hookset.  I cant tell how many times I missed a fish because my hook was too big, to thick, and too dull and my line did not basically match the diameter of the wire.  There was a time when I didnt catch a fish all week and had many spit the hook.  You might also want to trim the weed guard for the jigs and for the craws try a wide gap hook because theres a lot of plastic you need to go through to get a good hookset.  Hope this helps ;)

I use braid but not wide gap ill try that thanks

What length rod are you using? I use a 7'6" flippin stick for fishing jigs and a 7'2" MH XF rod for fishing T-rigs. That added length lets you pick up line VERY fast and you'll lose less fish.

One thing might help you is to understand how a bass eats a crawfish.

They inhale it, crush it, blow it out, and inhale it again to swallow it tail first.

Wait a few seconds after a hit to allow that procedure to complete.

Longer rod, straight shank hook, let them take the bait dont' set RIGHT away (sometimes helps sometimes makes it worse), high speed reel so you can reel up ALL the slack before setting the hook, some days it's smaller fish or even blue gill just nipping at it.

You tying a leader to your braid? Sometimes stretch can actually help get them to hold it a second longer as they don't feel that you're there right away.  Tie a leader if you're not. 3-4ft.

These are all worth trying, but then again, it could just be the way they're biting or tiny fish.

Make sure you are rigging the plastics correctly. Most of the time skin hooked or texposed is the way to go. Nothing will cause you to miss more strikes than improperly rigged plastics. Using extra sharp hooks and a rod with enough backbone to feel hits and set the hook is crucial. I have no issues hooking up on gamakatsu EWG hooks, from fishing with 6 pound test with small flukes all the way up to 14 pound test with big worms and lizards.
