Has anyone used the bass pro shops excel mono filament line? I used berkley trilene forever but now that's its $8 for 300yds because of the "improved formula" I won't used it anymore. Anyways I use 6lb - 16lb test line and I fish some tournamnets so I need the line to be dependable and I've heard some mixed reviews about memory and breaking issues. Any information about excel line would be appreciated.

I've used it in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 17lb test and for both spinning and baitcasting applications.  It's a good (enough) line. Are there better nylon monofiliment lines?  Sure, but they usually cost considerably more.  Excel is a good value and works well enough.  Is there some memory? Sure, but nothing that affected castability or fishability to any extent.  Breakage? The key is "line watchfulness" - so to speak.  Keep an eye on the line for abrasion, retie often, trim back 6" or a foot on the retie, etc.   I also have to say that just about all my water is open with hardly any slop, although (like most of Tennessee) I have quite a few rock ledges underwater that introduce an abrasion factor.   In my water, Excel works well.

 

I would still be using Excel for nearly all applications if I hadn't jumped on the Yo-Zuri Hybrid bandwagon - another great value line.  I do still use Excel in 14 and 17lb, but YZ has mostly replaced the other pound test applications.

$8 for 300yds, whats the problem with that? Still cheap.

One of the best mono for the $$$$$ IMO & in the opinion of some of the best fishermen I know personally.

I know it's not horrible but excel is 1500yds for $9 and I was having major issues with the trilene breaking right before they switched to the new formula which i haven't tried yet. I mostly use fluro for tournaments but for every day fishing it cost to much the way I like to change line out.

i use trilene XL, big game or stren for mono, never had a problem with either...

if youre using that much line changing it out frequently then youre probably wasting more line than you actually use. ive had the same mono in some of my reels for 2-3 years now. i only respool when a reel gets low or i want to change the size of line on a certain reel...and i dont have problems with breakoffs. last fish i broke off was a 40+lb flathead on 10lb line several years ago...

I bought some a few years ago and it wasnt bad line. I like sunlines mono better. I use it and big game as backing generally.

Fluorocarbon is a different story than mono, one small little nick or bend can cause it to snap.  Also when fishing in a tournament I do not like to risk losing a fish so I switch line pretty often. Then again during tournament season I am fishing at least twice mon- thurs and then friday saturday and sunday.   

I have been using BPS Excel mono on the murky Tidal Potomac for 10 years in 8,12, 14 and 20lb.  Love it.

Good line for mono.  I have used it in 10,14, and 17lb test and never had an issue.  Cast great and have yet to have a breakoff due to the lines fault.   Due to my love of sensativity while fishing with fluorocarbon,  I don't use Excel much with the exception of topwater/buzzbait and shallow crankbait and spinnerbait applications.  Another downfall is its made in China over the made in USA of Trilene.

I love the Excel mono. I have used it for the past couple years and I have yet to have a problem. You cannot beat it for the price.

might I suggest trying the trilene big game mono??? I use it quite a bit, esp in heavier test like 15 and 20 lb. and have not had any problems. I actually think the line performs pretty well. Is is maybe not quite as inexpensive as the Bass Pro excel, but much cheaper than Trilene xl.

I tried it to save some money, but didnt like it. Seems to stretch to much. I could yank my rod so hard a 2lbs fish would fly 50' out across the water trying to set the hook cause any less most would get off lol

But this thread is about mono, not Fluorocarbon, so why would you even bring that up? also, line doesnt just up and go bad in a weeks time with proper care. If you just use a lot of line, thats one thing, otherwise youre probably wasting it while at the same time complaining about the price...

The reason I brought up fluorocarbon was because the post you commented on said he changes line a lot and uses fluorocarbon. You need to watch out for bends in fluorocarbon more than you do mono hence having to cut a couple of inches off and retrying more often.

i understand what youre saying and im not disputing it, but he was referencing fluorocarbon being too expensive for his everyday fishing the way he changes line out so he would prefer to use mono for the everyday fishing. theres simply no need to change out mono frequently unless your spool is getting low from lots of use is all im saying...
