Phenix M1 Questions

Looking for inputs from folks who have fished a *casting* M1 for some length of time.

What do you think of the actual taper vs the rated taper; i.e is a rated extra-fast rod actually extra-fast, or more of a fast? What about a fast-rated rod if you have one?

Also interested in the sweet spot for a given rod. For example, let's say you have the 7'2" MH rated for 1/4 to 3/4 oz baits. What's the lure weight that best loads up the rod without feeling like it's getting overloaded. (I understand it's probably a personal preference). Please understand I'm not trying to know what's the min and max weights I can throw/ fish with one (subtle difference).

How does the sensitivity of the lineup compare to one or more of these: Powell Max/ Endurance, St Croix Avid, Shimano Crucial/ Cumaras (the older ones), Dobyns Champion (not the Extreme).

Thanks,

The only answer I can give you would be the sensitivity, I think it's better that all those besides the champion, which it feels a slight bit less sensitive, I don't own one but have used a friends and this is my opinion about what I had felt in the rod

I have the 7'2 H/XF. I accidentally shipped it to my parents house in Missouri (stupid story not worth explaining) but I did get to fish it a bit when I was there over Christmas break. I feel that the XF action is a true XF action. My lure selection was limited but from what I threw I felt that it cast 1/2oz -ish lures the best, but it still did a decent job with 1/4oz jig heads, which suprised me. As far as sensitivity goes, I agree with bmlum. I have an Endurance and a Champion. Its probably better than the Endurance and very close to if not as good as the Champion. I'll have to wait for the rod to get here and do side by side comparisons but I feel confident saying its a GREAT rod for the money.

Definitely great for the money and a good champion alternative

Thanks guys!

Does anyone have a 7'2" MH or the 7'8" MH? On the Phenix website (but not on TW), the lure ratings on both seem to be 1/2 to 3/4 ozs, which is a pretty small range if you ask me.

I don't pay a lot of attention to the ratings, but if I'm buying a rod, I do want to know what it's designed for..

Thanks once again,

What do you plan on using it for? I find that strange regarding the discrepancy between the ratings on the Phenix website and TW. If I recall my M1 has 1/4-1 1/4 on the blank. I would imagine the MH would be more along the lines of the ratings posted on the TW page. When I was testing out the 7'2 H/XF I found it did a decent job casting a 1/4 football head jig with a grub on it so I would guess the MH/F would at least do as good of a job.

^^ Bottom-contact baits.

Thats what I will use my M1 for as well. If I was you, I'd go for it. I'm deciding on the MH M1 or a MH Duckett for my next rod if that counts for anything.
