Used The New Baitcaster For The First Time

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I finally got chance to play with the new rod and reel. Was watching ever video I could so that I could minimize backlash as much as possible, and it was under control :). I spooled up some mono (momoi hi-catch) and let it rip. it feels so different from a spinning rod but it is so much faster to keep fishing. Reel it in and cast. Really cool.

One question. How far should I be able to cast is it the line that helps it go further or was it all the brakes I set up to keep me from backlashing. LOL

If the brakes are set all the way up and your tension is set correctly then you can count on gaining alot of distance once you really get the hang of it. Once your hands, eyes, and thumb get the muscle memory down you can ease of the breaks little by little until you get the desired distance.

As far as line goes, lighter line generally will let you cast a little further.

The more you keep practicing, the less you'll need the breaks. I don't use any breaking on my reels, and a lot of times I turn my spool tension down lower than recommended. I get some really good casting distance, though I'll admit sometimes I do get a little over confident and take it to far and eventually find myself picking out a bird's nest.

Fl_bass thats a good setting. You can leave it there and when its calm out and you want more distance you can turn the mag breaks down, and turn the mag breaks up when your casting into heavy wind..

Mine are set a little lower than that but half way on both sets is pretty standard and will give you good performance.

Kudos on watching the videos, applying it and practicing it. I had to learn the hard way. Gkenn's videos and the articles here will help the learning curve alot!!

Practice pitching and roll casting next. I do it in the back yard using old coffee cans and 2.5 gal buckets as targets.

LOL I even watched videos on how to remove backlashes. It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I guess I'll see how that trick works on a really bad backlash but so far it has worked.
