Flipping Specific?

Featured Replies

I know the flipping technique and flipping specific rods but I'm unfamiliar with flipping specific reels, specifically the Ardent. Is this just hype or is there a benefit? Also, I've noticed many reels advertise a "flipping switch". What does this do? I always thought with flipping a reel is just a line hder like fly fishing so I'm curious about these specialized items.

Thanks

The flipping switch on a reel is pretty handy at times.  Basically you keep your thumb on the thumb bar make your flip then release the thumb bar and the reel is already engaged. You don't have to turn the handle to engage the reel.  I have 3 reels with a switch and use it often.

The advantage with the ardent flippin reels is the skinnier spool which reduces line friction through the guide making for more consistent flippin performance. also the reel features a high internal set drag which makes sure the drag will not release when you set the hook. they are a great reel to flip with, others work too but this one is made especially for it. with the flippin switch I dont necessarily like them, it is just one more thing to mess up on a reel. That being said some guys like them...

If your spool is revolving, you're talking about pitching. The orginal question was about flipping. If you have a dedicated flip stick, the reel makes no difference. Get an el cheapo, lock down the drag and go for it.

If you want a more versatile setup, you need a pretty good reel to pitch.
