Powell Max 703C Or 704C For Jigs 1/4-1/2 Oz?

Featured Replies

Any thoughts as title suggests? Just curious to see what people have had through experience. I hear there is a big jump between the two and i do not have the opportunity to hold them since there are no stores nearby. Fishing around weedy areas, occasional wooden structure. What do you guys think?

Thanks

I have a 753 Max for jigs. In my opinion, and for my tastes, it's a little too heavy (in power) for anything lighter than 1/2 oz jigs (with a trailer).

I would go with the 704 the 703 will handle 1/2 oz jigs but the 704 will have more power if you are going to pitch to cover.I use a endurance 764 and 714 for most of my jig applications and feel the 4 power to be perfect for jigs.I use my 703 for finesse jigs and light worming.the 703 is also a great spinner bait and top water rod.

I use my 703 for a wide range of lures and techniques, including jigs. I mostly throw 3/8 jigs and this rod handles them great. I fish them in and around light brush and sparse weeds with 15# CXX and very rarely have any trouble getting good sets or getting the fish in the boat. However, if you are going to use this rod strictly as a jig stick and plan to use 1/2 jigs regularly, I think I would step up to the 704. I love my 703 and use it a ton but as I said it may be a little light on the power side for a dedicated jig rod.

Your post is interesting to me, I'm just curious about which top water baits you like to throw with the 703. I like it for 1/4-3/8 buzzbaits but that's about it. I find the 706CB to work much better for treble hooked lures. Thanks

I throw larger poppers and spook style baits up to 1/2 oz it works well with the softer tip

Great advice guys as always. I think i'll stick with the 703 based on what's said here. Much appreciated.
