De-Barbing Gut Hooked Fish

Featured Replies

I remember some time ago on BassResource.com that there was a tool everyone was talking about and using for de-barbing gut hooked fish. At least I think there was.

I'd like to get a good tool for getting gut-hooked fish undone and putting them safely back in the water.

any help appreciated -wm

I think you may be referring to the D-Barb tool that cut the hook while it was in a fishes mouth and had a magnet to catch the piece you cut off. They don't make them anymore.

Mike, Try what Kyle has posted. Ever since I joined BR last year. This has worked everytime, although I've had to cut my line a few times to get the hook turned over through the gils on a smaller fish.

I'm pretty sure the company went out of business.

how awful :(

Go to "http://www.dbarb.com/testimonials.html" and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the "Order Now" button. It will take you to a tackle shop that sells them. I think its called the Dbarb Medic.

Hope this helps!

When I gut hook a bass real bad I get my longest pliers, go in behind the gills, turn the hook the opposite way it went in, and pull the hook out through the gills. This works pretty much every time, even when I'm with friends they'll hand me the gut hooked bass and after a couple minutes of holding the bass under water, it swims aways no worse for the wears
