How Long Will Fishing Line Last?

Featured Replies

I bought some Yo zuri about 3 years ago and still use it, I change my line after every season.  I used up the last of it this year after re spooling all my reels.  The last tournament I fished in I had my line break twice on hooksets.  I really don't think it was my knot (Palomar knot), and one area I wasn't fishing rocks and always check my line.  I love this line and have never had this issue, could this just be bad luck or am I pushing the life of this line and should re spool with new line?

line can last years if you take care of it but really its not that expensive when you think about it to change when you think its time....the $20 a spool will save much more than that in broken off lures

with that said ive had braid on the rod i fish with daily and its about a year or so old right now and still in great condition although i have some of the slick powerpro now and ill respool with that soon to try it out

I've used properly stored line that was years old. However, if what happened to you happened to me I'd get new line because of some doubts, whether logical or not.

If stored properly it will last years on the spool.  I remember reading an article on bassmaster.com with Aaron Martens saying he's got spools of line that is nearly 10 years old that he still uses.  If it was braid, I wouldn't even worry about it unless it was stored in a wet environment as it does eventually rot.

Braid will not rot. It is completely impervious to water. It cannot dry rot, and it cannot rot due to vein submerged. The only thing that will damage braid is heat and uv light. Heat will destroy braid relatively quickly. Leave a spool of braid in a hot vehicle a few days and you see a difference. That said, all lines will suffer from that sort of heat.
