The Art of Drop Shoting

Featured Replies

I am very new to the drop shot technique. Never fished one in my life. Im looking to buy hooks, wieghts and soft plastics. Please share the brands y'all use that makes this technique effective. Im not looking for line or rods that is taken care of.

    Thanks,

   John

Don't focus on the brand, any brand will work.  Make sure us use the correct types of terminal tackle, and most importantly use the correct knot so that your hook sits at 90 degrees to your line or close to it ( I believe either a Palomar or double cinch would do it).  Other than that, its all about  when to fish it and where.

One more tip, use a clip on egg sinker if you are fishing in rock, much easier to just pull it off then breaking line and shorting your leader to the hook by retying another knot.

Drop Shot:

1.  Be sure to tie a Palomar Knot and then run the line through the hook's eye from the front of the hook to the back so that it sticks straight out from the line.

2.  Use 8 pound fluoro line on a spinning rig. 6 pound test is better, depending on the size of the bass you will be catching.

3.  Any weight at the end of the 12 to 18 inches from the hook to the end of your line will do.

You can use the special and expensive drop shot bell weights or tie on a bullet weight.  The advantage of the drop shot weights is that they release when they get stuck in the rocks and structure.

Take the above suggestions about the weights to save money.

4.  To get fancy, use a jig and pig as your weight so you can fish the bottom and above the bottom.

5.  Any plastic bait will do. Small baits or Senkos will work.

6.  Rig some plastics and Senkos "wacky" and fish them.

7.  Hook sizes can be as small as the drop shot hooks to a #1 gold or 1/0 gold or a 1/0 weedless.  I usually use either drop shot hooks or the #1 gold hooks.

8.  Fish the rig straight down or cast it out and fish it Texas rig style.

9.  Let the rod tip shake the bait.  Just move your hand slightly to that the rod tip shakes and you are making a very good presentation.

10.  Move bait back to you as you would a Texas rig.

11.  Watch  your line and always keep a finger on the line off the spinning reel so you can feel the strikes.

Sometimes the bass will take the bait and walk with it while at other times they will hit it hard and run like the Devil.

Good luck.  ;)
