Soft Body Frog rigging?

Featured Replies

Just got a couple different types of soft body frogs Canyon Plastics Frog and ZMAN Elite Hard Leg FrogZ. Im having trouble with the Elite Hard Leg FrogZ, im using a 4/0 Gammy EWG hook and rigged it straight.  Everything works fine till the frog lands in the water, it lands upside down. How do you guys rig your soft body frogs so that they dont land on their back and run true? Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the frogs you mentioned, but to me - does it really matter if the frog is upside down or rightside up?  I use horny toads and sizmic toads and it seems to me like the action is more important than how they sit in the water.  This past weekend I spent most of my time froggin and noticed that some times they laid up and sometimes down, but bass would hit them either way.

i'm pretty sure you are gonna love those canyon plastics frogs , did you get the 4.5" ones ? they are the only frogs i use !! you can run them real slow and the legs will kick nice and steady . if you let them sink into open pockets , twitch them real slowly like a fluke and then let them swim freely and if there is a bass around he will crush it !!! keep your rod tip up and cause a bow in your line , when a fish hits the bait it will take up the slack and then set the hook !! you don't need a huge hook set , just a quick tug on the line will set the hook . i use 5/0 Owner twist lock hooks with the CPS changed out to the bigger 1/4" ones (they sell them seperately for a few bucks) these hook and bigger CPS's are the way to go , iv'e been fishing them ( the Canyon Plastics frogs) for a couple of years now and they are the only frog i stock in my tackle bag . if you have any questions about them , shoot me a PM  ;)

I got the 3.5" Grasshopper ones.  They are awesome looking in the water. I actually got bit on it today, it was a little scrapper though, not big enough eat the bait. The first time I used them the legs didn't kick as much as I would have liked, but a dunk in boiling water for 10sec cured that right up.  My question was about the Hard Leg Frogz, http://www.***.com/Z_Man_Hard_Leg_Frogz_Elite_3pk/descpage-ZMHLFE.html#pImage

They land on their backs, and was wondering how to remedy that. I was just thinking upsizing the hook to a 5/0 EWG or sticking with the 4/0 EWG and get the superline hooks. Actually I got bit on this frog today too. Buzzing it slowly along the bank another scrapper bit the leg. Im liking frog fishing more and more... OH NO... I see the monkey in my peripheral vision...

Might use a heavy wire hook and be sure not to bow the back upward when you skin hook it. The belly should be bowed downward similar to a boat bottom for best results. Also a 1/16 oz weighted hook will help as well as add distance to your cast.

There are a couple of ways to make sure the frog runs true.

You can use wire solder to add weight to an EWG-type hook. All that's needed is 3-4 wraps around the hook shank.

You can also use a weighted frog/swimbait hook. I use the Stanley or the Mr. Blitz frog hook in 1/8 oz.
