Kayak And Trolling Motor Question

I'm giving a Kayak some serious thought and had a question.

What would be the chances of putting a trolling motor about 2-3 feet in front if your seat? Basically you would have to cut and make a mount in the Kayak to do this. You could easily operate it when Seated and standing.

How hard would this be?

Could certainly be done, depending on the kayak.

Easier would be doing this on a hybrid kayak with gunnels like a canoe allowing you to either make a front mount, or buy one.

In my extensive googling (up and until I built mine), I did not see bow mounted trolling motors on kayaks.

Anything can be done with a little elbow grease and ingenuity! Interested to see what you come up with.

You will only be limited based on which yak you buy. A lot of kayaks have a transom now-a-days, so a hand controlled trolling motor with tiller extension can get the job done. Also, my brain is telling me you can mount a foot-control model if you beef up the hull with a few aluminum strips on the underside of the screws.

Check out this video of the NuCanoe, with a front mounted troller and an OB motor.

And to answer your question - how hard would it be to mount a motor? Not hard at all. Take a 2x4, cut it so maybe a foot comes off the side of the yak, use some L shaped aluminum mounting plates from lowes, and attach the 2x4 to yak via the L plates. Then screw mount a "transom mount trolling motor" onto that 2x4.

That sand colored one with the outboard is too cool!

Thanks for the info. Ill definatly use it

I had a trolling motor on my old kayak. I used a 2x4, some pvc and some "u" bolts and mounted it in my flush mount rod holders.
