Motor Guide Shaft Shorten

Featured Replies

I have a 67 lb 24 volt motor guide that I need to shorten the 60" shaft on, to accommodate my bass boat. Can someone tell me the best way to do this? Thanks!!

Hand control or foot controlled.

Not sure if its the best way but I did one once. I just took the motor off, cut the shaft down, drilled a new whole for the bolt, and sealed it with 3M 5200. It worked several years until I sold the boat. I didn't shorten the wires because the tucked into the shaft easily and zip ties kept them tight.

foot control

I have only shortened hand controls so Im not much help. I do know a new shorter shaft is around a 100. If you search online you might be able to find a how to I have seen it done before.

I figured I would give an update incase someone else wanted to do this in the future.

You simply cannot shorten the shaft on a MG trolling motor the shaft it some weird thread on both ends. I took a shorter shaft off a 48" brute I had laying around. The things I learned. Do not take the lower unit apart. Simply cut wires in the head and unscrew the lower unit from the shaft then pull wires thru. When replacing the shaft itself loosen the set screw in the gear head and push the plastic head down the outer shaft. take a wrench and unscrew the gear. Put it back together the same way it came apart. One other tip is after you remove the cover. take a few pictures on your cell phone from different angles. it will make the rewiring simple!!

Hope this helps someone!
