Got My New Lews Tp, Now How To Adjust It!

Featured Replies

Well I got my New Lews TP in yesterday, its was suppose to come in Tues, I was thrilled!  Now for adjustment.  I have watched the videos on here and several other places which have helped a ton.  I just wanna make sure i do all I can to help this reel perform.  So I left the brakes with 2 on 2 off.  I set the spool tension knob to where my rig falls freely and hits the gound and doesnt turn more then one rotaion.  I casted seveal times in the back yard and its casting great with the mag break set on 3. No backlash and bairly have to feather it, guess my main question is have I done all I need to do. Thanks guys.

If you are happy with your casting distance, and not getting any backlashes then it sounds like you have it set perfect. You may be able to get more distance by taking off some breaks, but not without risk.

Sounds like you got it where you want it! Congrats on the new reel, what is your first impressions with the reel? How about overall size and palm ability? I have the BB-1 and love it and been thinking of getting a TP!

If you like the BB-1 you'll like the tournament pro I have both

Depending on what you are throwing, you may have to tweak it a little. Mainly the tension knob if your baits vary in weights. Other than that, sounds like you adjusted the reel just fine. Go have fun.

Nice, thanks guys. I really love the feel so far. I love the compact size and the palming in my left hand. It retrieves very smooth and casts like silk. I did take all the breaks of and got immediate bird nest so I put 2 back on. When I get to the lake ill be able to see the comparison between my old reels. I am gonna forgo the bearing flushing do to being a novice on reel work. I really like the wide paddles on the retrieve, I guess it's the surface area. Being the ever tinkerer I just wanted to make sure.

I use 2 centrifugal brakes with lures 3/8 oz and heaver and use 1 brake when using anything less then 3/8 oz. Then fine tune the mag brake depending on the wind.

You guys were stop on once again. I had it adjusted perfect! Took it to the lake and was casting dead into a 5-10 mph wind with the brake on 6 and not one single back lash! Casted farther then my old reels into the wind. very smooth and long. I cant wait to see what it will do without all the wind.

how do you like the reel now that youve used it for a bit?? i just scored one off ebay for $93 !! cant wait to use it

While I havent had any new reels in the past 15 years or so I will say this is by far the smoothest farthest casting reel I have used.  I was casting the other day in 5-10 mph winds right in my face and ZERO backlash.  I could easily cast as far as my old reels into the wind.  I also love the handles shape and width, very solid. I will be buying another for another rod for sure.

Sounds like you got her dialed in pretty good to me, just remember to check and make adjustmeants when switching lures/baits and to loosen up that drag when your done for the day and put it up to prolong the life of your reel and drag system. Good luck... I love my lews casting reel, by far the best reel I've ever used especially for the price it can't be beat in my opinion. Welcome to the lews club :D
