i need jig help

Featured Replies

i am thinking about using jig for the first time

first of all i dont know what brand is good to buy and

what power and legnth rod is good for jig

can you use braid or fluorocarbon?

i fish mostly stained to dark green tea color water(what color is good for that)

what is good trailer to use for jig

i prefer 1/4 to 5/8 oz jig

Brands - Bass Pro Shops and Tru-Tungsten are the 2 I use, but there are a lot of great jig brands out on the market. I haven't found anything better in the football head jig than BPS though.

Power and Length - I use a Medium action 6ft. 6inch. rod. Most people go 7ft medium heavy though. I just like having that extra sensitivity in the tip but it is sometimes harder to be accurate when flipping.

I use braid with a 4 to 6 ft. flouro leader, depending on the water clarity. And, depending on the cover, I'll throw anything from 20 lb. braid, all the way up to 65lb braid. My leaders are anywhere from 12lb to 20lb flouro. Just use heavier line for thicker cover.

I'm going to tell you right now, and remember this - You're going to lose a lot of jigs while you learn! I bet I lost about $40 worth of jigs learning to fish timber and rocks. Wood is a real pain to learn on because if you set the hook into wood, its over. Unless you can reach the jig, you won't get that hook out of the wood.

everyone is going to mention their favorite brand so results will vary. My favorite is North star baits (member here). I use a MH or H fast action rod depending on the situation (7'-7'6") . Floro or braid??? once again results will vary. I fish water that is quite clear so I use floro. Braid will also work well for your water. Try them both and see which you like more. I normally never go less than 12 lb test. Hope this helps. good luck!!!
