Tuning A Crankbait???

Featured Replies

For several years, my favourite crankbait lure for our local largemouth has been the 4 1/2 inch Bomber Long'A' in a sort of brownish perch pattern.  Consistently gets them all season long.

But I've recently found that some of them seem to work differently from others.  The one's that score best have a wide, slow wiggle, rather than a tight faster one.  And I cant seem to figure out why some of them work so differently?    And also,  if there is anything I can do about it.

Maybe this is just a flaw in manufacturing quality and consistency, and I should throw them away?

Can I re-tune those 'tight wiggle' lures into a slow wiggle?  How do you make a crankbait with a tight wiggle into one that has a wide, slow wiggle?

Welcome any comments, advice, etc.

How are you attaching the lure to your line? No two crankbaits run the same. I've heard some pros say for every ten you buy one might be a consistent producer. I wish I knew the secret to tell them apart, only trial and error work for me.

I hate it when I lose my best producing crank. The next one never produces the same way.

When it's slow fishing I cast out every crankbait to make sure they run straight straight and even. I have a needle nose pliers to tune them. I know it's not my knot because I use ball bearing swivels. I can't tie knots in the dark.

We need to look very closely how the crank runs in the water.

To me, tuning doesn't involve changing the wiggle pattern on a crankbait, it involves getting a lure that runs to one side to run straight. Bass Pro has an inexpensive tuning tool which works much easier for me than pliers.
