I bury the hook just slightly in the plastic of the worm to keep it weedless but I often still get algae on the front of the bullet-type weight on nearly every retrieve.  Does the algae make much of a difference to the bass?  Anything to do to avoid it?

The previous poster probably has the right idea by recommending weedless topwater. No matter how weedless your lure is rigged, you can always pick up vegetation at the line tie, so the only way to avoid it is to stay out of the weeds.

I don't think a little bit hurts, but it accumulates quickly, so clean it off after every cast.  Some people say some products like megastrike will make it come through vegetation more readily, but I don't know if those claims hold up to the snot-like algae.

Agree. One of my reservoirs is getting slammed with algae blooms. I have been throwing weightless wacky, but find the fish are closer to the bottom, catching more when I throw a weighted wacky. But 8 out of 10 retrieves are full of one kind of algae, weed, or snot grass (also algae) or another. Pain in the butt, especially the black stuff that doesn't want to let go of your line, hook, or worm.

 

I'd throw topwater, have done so a few times, but never had success. So I put up with the crap, mutter under my breath every time I haul in 4 pounds of reservoir crud, cast again....

You'll have to go weightless or throw top water lures. I have a pond that I fish that is like this. To look at it, you'd think that it would be the greatest top water pond of all time. Unfortunately, that's not the case. It's great fishing early in the season before the algae blooms but once it takes over it's slow going over there.

I like to do the same as the poster above, i will rig my berkley power worms or baby brush hogs weightless and let them glide on the top or slowly fall into an opening in the slop.

Fish top water hollow body frogs!!! Other than that cast out the plastic, I go weightless, and skim across top of the water and drop it in the gaps in the vegetation
