Mercury Outboard Trouble

Featured Replies

All,

A friend and I own a 1995 Ranger together, and it has a Mercury 115hp, 2 cycle engine. The other day, my friend, Josh, took the boat out to Guntersville, and the motor started and idled fine. When he opened up the throttle, the motor responded normally until he hit about 2000 rpm, then it appeared to drag, with no additional rpm gained, even though the throttle is all the way down. He mentioned that it felt as if the trim was too far down, but he adjusted the trim and it did not have an effect. He also mentioned that if the boat is not in gear, the engine appears to get fuel fine, as the engine will rev like normal. Any ideas on what is going on here? Anyone had a similar situation?

We have owned the boat for about a year and a half, and have had no problems with the engine until now. Also, the last time we took the boat out was the 5th of July, and the engine ran fine.

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like not running on all cylinders...coil pack out or something similar.  Take it to a tech to hook up, could be a cheap quick fix.

Sounds like it could be a fuel supply issue. If it will rev fine while not in gear (not under a load) but bogs and refuses to rev while in gear (under a load) it makes me think that your engine isn't getting enough fuel. When under a load the fuel demands are greater than while not under a load, hence the difference when out of gear and while in gear. I would start by checking your fuel line from the tank to the engine. I have read, not experienced, that the ethenal in fuel will deteriorate the inside of fuel lines and cause an issue similiar to what you have described.

Just a guess...

Yep, agree with the above.

Check all fuel lines including the one inside the motor.

If that is not the problem check the computer.

Hope it is a simple and cheap fix.

I had the same problems. I installed an electric fuel pump on mine. the down side is it is a 12 psi pump I need about 7. When idleing across no wakes it will load up and not want to jump right out of the hole. But once it unloads it hauls ass!
