Quabbin Advice - Mass

Featured Replies

My short experience with fishing has been limited to lakes, ponds and rivers...all from shore.

I'm going to be fishing the Quabbin soon and renting a boat. What kind of advice can you give me?

Its my second time out on the boat(first time didn't go so well), so I know the area pretty well.  I've had success from shore, being on the boat is a different story.

No fish finder either. I'll be fishing for anything that bites. :)

PM please if you want to chat privately.

Thanks!

I have never fished the Quabbin. But try posting this question in the smallmouth section.  Crestlinner2008 posts in that section often and he fishes the Quabbin very often.

Been fishing the Q for 40 years. Which gate are going out of and which species are you targeting? If you are going out for LM's, then either 43 or 31 will get you into some nice areas. Plenty of coves, rock shoals and points to target.

Of course, if you fishing for smallies this time of the year, you're going to need a portable sonar and fish off-shore structures, like humps, channels and deep points. The smallies(big) are off-shore right now. Won't be moving shallow again until the first or second frost - if the Q is still open by then. :)

If Salmon are your target species, then by all means get out to the baffle dam (either side) and drift with shiners. Good luck!

Crestliner2008 is one of the best out there for finding and catching smallies on Q in the summertime.

I have only been fishing Quabbin for 20 years and my season runs from April when Q opens until early July when the great majority of SMB go deep and you need sonar.

Think it's a good idea for newcomers to carry the Quabbin Reservation Guide Map from the below link until you're familiar with this big water.

wngan9447, I'm sending you a PM with more detail. Enjoy the Q!

Hey Will, thanks for the reports.

I read all of them last week. Haha. Thanks again for the reports. Out here today. Hope to have a good outing.

Hi crestliner, I've seen your photos. You kill it out there. Thanks for all the posts as well.

You both are a true asset to the North east forums.
