Alternative Jig Trailers

Featured Replies

I know how much many of you love the Rage Tail Craws. However, I was wondering if any of you have ever used different trailers such as split tail trailers, 5" grubs, etc. to tip your skirted jigs. If so, was it successful?

The reason for this quesiton is because I was thinking of imitating shad with swim jigs, but am not sure if tipping it with a plastic jerkbait or swimbait, etc. would help in that aspect.

I use Shadalicious swimbaits on swim jigs all the time. I really like the 4.5 inch models for swimming jigs.

If I'm imitating craws, I mainly use the paca craws from net baits or the rage craws, but I have used a dual tail grub from time to time. I like to use the dual tails in a black or really dark green when the water is stained (almost to the point I'd consider muddy). Dual tails will give a different vibration in the water and sometimes thats all the fish want.

For a baitfish mimic, I'll use something like a swimming senko as a trailer.  It's produced a lot of fish for me.

So you hook them through the side?

Is the tail supposed to move up and down or side to side?

Rig it just like a standard jig trailer with the hook exposed.  Thread the hook through the head, then run it out the back of the bait.  The tail will move side to side on that swim senko.

Oh- I get it now. Brain fart here. At first for some reason it looked to me like you had hooked it through the side in that picture.

Just to add:

The only reason I use the swim senkos as trailers is because they work perfectly for it after they get a little torn up texas rigging them.  You can use almost any paddletail style lure as a trailer to mimic a baitfish.  I've also used grubs, twin tails, etc etc.  Brown Fat Albert Grub on a brown swim jig works great.  Dip the tip of the tail in some chartreuse JJ's and you've got a great Bluegill imitation.  The colors aren't all that important, it's more of matching the general hue and the size of the forage.
