Wanna get better hookup on the topwater bite? Heres how!

Featured Replies

We all love that topwater explosion, whether were throwing a Popper,Buzzbait,Spook,or Jitterbug. However alot of us(myself included) are too quick on the hookset. Ive been told that you need to discipline yourself to feel the weight of the fish AND THEN SET THE HOOK.

Wanna practice that and get good at it? Throw a topwater in low light/no light conditions. Youll have no choice but to wait to feel the fish prior to the hookset.

I was doing this last night,I could barely see. I was throwing an Ultralite Hula Popper . Id hear the splash and commotion of the strike, but wouldnt feel anything. There were times when I waited, and the rod was almost ripped out of my hand.

Practice your topwater hooksets at night and I believe this will help you when fishing frogs and other topwaters and such during the day.

thank you this i thinnk is very useful i actually find nightfishing to help all techniques it forces u to really focus pay attention and builds confedince in your equpiment i love fishing a jig at night beccause it forces me to truly focus on what i think its doing lol

I have also increased my hook-up ratio dramatically by adding a sureset hook to the back of my topwater lures. I don't know what it is, but many times, probably 6-7 out of 10 times, the fish are hooked on that sureset part of the hook. As an added benefit, being topwater baits, the sureset does not snag on every rock, log, brush pile in the lake. ;D
