Advice On My Next Rod

Featured Replies

Hey fellas,

I was wondering what your thoughts were on getting a new flipping and pitching rod; mostly pitching. I have read a couple of threads and most people seem to like a 7' MH rod, but I also read an article that said pros are moving towards 8' for the extra leverage. Right now, I'm leaning towards a St. Croix Rage 7'6" MH rod... any thoughts or advice would be great. Thanks...

P.S. I have a $100 Gander Mountain gift card coming in the mail, so I'm only limited to buying a rod off their site.

Do you have a set price range?

I really like my Rage rods, and seeing as you can probably get one around $50 with that gift card, its going to be tough to beat.  They are made with the same blanks as the Avid, a very highly regarded rod.

If you do most of your fishing from the boat I like 7'6", but 7'6" can be a pain to manage.  I use a 7'6" Rage for cranking and I find myself leaving it on the rack when I'm not in my own boat since its a tad unweildy otherwise.

I'm sure you'll get a ton of recommendations for the ***, but I think a MH Rage would fit the bill nicely.  Remember that St. Croix tends to run a bit firmer than most and play with the rod instore with your reel mounted on it if possible before buying.

I appreciate the advice! I don't own a boat, but I'm in a new bass club team for my university, so I usually fish off th back of people's boat. Perhaps the 7'1" is better suited.

I don't really want to spend more than $100 even with the gift card. As you said the blank on the Rage is the same, and I really like the design on the Rage rod. I wish Gander offered more rod manufacturers. I expect people to sway me to the *** lol.

Gander has a $50 off $250 sale through today.  You could get a St. Croix LTB or a 13 *** for $100 with the coupon and your gift card.
