Strategy For This Spot

Featured Replies

I have found a launch spot for my kayak in a small canal surrounded by homes. I think this is a promising spot and it is super close to my house. Being new at Bass fishing I still struggle on how to approach fishing spots. Imagine you put it at 7am, it's 75 degrees and mostly sunny. You start with a topwater? Then what? I know this is hugely dependent but it would be nice if I could get a general idea of how you approach I'd really appreciate it.

Topwater then....Flip a creature to the docks, culverts, any trees etc. then work a soft swimbait or Texas rig. That is just me...the rest (what bait, weight and size or weightless) all depends.

Rvadog, it depends on the day. The area looks great. It may be a topwater day all day, who knows. Start with the usual spread of baits you would typically use, and see what they like and go from there. I am sorry, I wasn't specific but fishing down here is not predictable sometimes.

This is REALLY good advice. Similar structures to what I fish in my areas. Pay attention to the walls, the fish usually will hold to them. This time of the year the Shad are schooling around. Keep your eyes in the water, pay attention to what is going on. Look for the schooling Bass. What are they doing? Are they swimming around and hunting, or are they holding location?

Something i didnt mention is when you see the bait schooling and the bass busting that is the time to reach for a fluke. Work it on/towards the top if not then throw it into the pack and let it fall through and u are sure to get hit.

But like LMG said your observations will tell u what technique to use.

Think of the water column. Start top, then middle, then bottom. Same principle applys to retrieve. Burn it, normal it, then crawl it. You gotta find them in one of those depths and at one of those speeds.
