So rumor has it that jerkbaits (the hard ones) are great in the fall and winter.  I have decided that I want to give them an honest effort this year.  I ordered a couple LC pointer 78SP to get me started.  One is Ghost Minnow and one is Pearl Ayu.  Anyway, the water temperature today was 77.  The crankbait bite has been very good for two weeks now.  I am wondering when the best time would be to start with the jerkbaits?  I am getting bit on the crank in anywhere from 4-10 foot of water.  Any additional info regarding hard jerkbaits will be much appreciated!!

When the water temp starts to drop down into the 60's start moving into the shallow weedlines and throw jerbaits and lipless cranks.

Also dont abandon the spinnerbait...they were deadly for me yesterday

Thanks for the info guys.  I almost always have a spinnerbait tied on, it is one of my best producers.  The fishing was crap today, guess that crank bite is dying off now!

two days ago i was killing with lipless cranks.

but i wouldnt wait till cold water before throwing the ol' jerkbait. as soon as you see shad moving up on points or back into creeks, id have a jerkbait tied on. somtimes the bass in fall can gorge themselves on the shad migration and its hard to get them to hit regular fall lures. i find some success throwing a jerkbait that is more lifelike and subtle when everyone else is slinging the crap out of a spinnerbait.

Think of the hard jerkbaits like soft jerkbaits: Use them aggressively in warm water and when fish are active, and slow down and be more subtle when they aren't. Tuning and fishing suspending jerkbaits for cold water fishing is an art of itself.

You're in Texas so suspending jerkbaits should be nailing big Bass for you all Winter...
