Redfish bait for smallies

Featured Replies

I watched a local syndicated show several months ago and the host fished a redfish bait and it was very productive.  I'm going to test it tomorrow ( I know, one outing is not a fair test) and see if it is the real deal.  TV can lie.  If it's a dud i'll comment.  If it's a killer I will never tell.  Just kidding. I'll post.

What bait was it? It's really no big secret that most styles of bass lures catch redfish, snook, and vice versa.I just caught a few bass on a D.O.A shrimp today at a phosphate pit caught a redfish last week on a ragetail shad.

Okay, the bait did catch some fish and the fish that bit it, ate it so i'm going to continue to use it and get a better idea how it can produce.  It's the Strike King Magic Glass Minnow. I guess they come pre-rigged as a spinner bait and replacement bodies.  I used the bodies on a football jig head.  They are made of that elastek type material which I don't care for but the set up was an exposed hook like a tube or grub so it wasn't a problem. They are indestructable so if you don't hang up and break off they will last all day. I'm sure i'm not the first to use this bait for smallies but it's new to me. ;)

Yeah It's just a basic shad type body bait.Similar to the Mirrolure or DOA CAL. On a jighead I could definitely see this being a productive smallmouth bait as an alternative to basic curltail grub.I'd be willin to bet freshwater trout or even slab crappie would dog it too.

Put it on a Revenge Swimbait Head, worked quite well for river Smallies.  Read a thing from Shaw Grigsby about putting a drop or two of glue on the head to hold the glass minnow in place...amazing how many fish you can catch on one bait without even having to re-rig.  If you don't lose your rig to a bite off or a snag, I believe you could fish all day with one or two of these glass minnows.  Thanks for the heads up on this one...it will be in my arsenal from now on.

Picked up a better color and this bait works.  I was dragging it and hopping it.  The bonus is fish would pop it on the reel back. Cabelas carries them if anyone wants to give them a try.
