So I am thinking that it is getting about time to start putting that rod in my boat. What water temp does it work best in? What depth does it fish the best? What type of structure should I fish it? I am assuming I am going to throw it at points and secondary points. 

Creek, the bass will have to let you know where they are.

If your boat has electronics try to find the baitfish.

Suggest you read articles and view as many YouTube videos on the Alabama rig.

This rig can tire you out fast so try to find the baitfish as fast as possible.

The above is solid advice. I've had by far my most luck fishing them in big schools of shad. Most of the time I'm fishing any where from the surface to maybe 14-15 feet. I've not caught many fish on the rig unless there was shad nearby. Also I know a lot of guys are using straight braid and say they aren't experiencing their number of bites go down but I've tried it both ways and I always get more bites using copoly.  

The lake I fish the most we typically start seeing better success once the water temp drops to 60 or below.
