lures for clear water river in the south?

Featured Replies

the water is as clear as a swimming pool, the water temp. is around 65 to 70,the weather has cooled down from a week around 90 degrees now around 78 or so.stiff breeze in afternoon and calm in morning and evenings.what  lures would you recommend in these conditions?thanks for any help,i'm completely stumped!

There's alot of variables to consider. The main thing (and most important) factor when fishing a river is current and how the fish are relating to it. Is it a tidal river?

A few more questions.

Whats the bottom composition?

Is there fishable cover? Weeds? Boulders?

What depths are you encountering?

Do you know the forage the bass are feeding on? If not I'm sure something that resembles a craw is a good start.

Personally a good ol' texas rigged worm or tube in any shade of "dirt" would be my first option. Here locally right now the fall topwater bite has just peeked (smallies). And a buzzbait or sammy is my weapon of choice.

Also try to stay low and conceal yourself as well as possible, it dont matter what you throw if the fish are looking at you!  Good luck

Trick worms, swimbaits, crank baits, pretty much anything you would use anywhere else.  All in natural colors.  Or the smoke colored senkos.

Drop shot!!!

The lures don't really change much. Lightsout pretty much nailed it. You need to determine how the fish are relating to the current. There is a lot of information out there on the subject. You may want to look at trout fishing books. Bass relate the same way in the current breaks and seems. In my experience smallmouth tend to be in faster moving water where Black bass will opt for the slower moving water. In a river the food generally pushed by the current to the fish so they do not tend to roam very far and are in predictable locations. If you are fishing a tidal system the fish will reposition with the tide fluctuation.

clear water i prefer natural presentations.. jerkbait, finesse worm, fluke, drop shot, and don't forget a spook.. fish will come from deep water and crush a topwater..

Casting dropshots letting it pause in current breaks and eddies, small cranks, poppers and Zara puppies. And don't forget the ole roostertail
