Fly Tying With Pheasant Feathers?

Featured Replies

I have some crappie jigs that I want to tie. Havent done tying of any kind. I have access to as much pheasant feathers as I need. Any info or advice on this?

I don't think pheasant is your best bet, free or not.

Check out these materials from barlowstackle.com:

I'd try some imitation polar bear hair which is also used for small jigs for cold water bass.

As far as learning to tie goes, I highly recommend the spiral bound version of "Fly Tying Made Clear And Simple" by Skip Morris. Better yet, attend a class for hands-on instruction. Bring some jig heads and material. Hopefully the trout fly guys won't throw you out!

Marabou, available at arts and craft shops, is very easy to work with and very cheap to start out with. As you progress, you can use more exotic feathers.

Maribu is your best bet for that purpose. There are other, better purposes for pheasant feathers. PT nymphs, etc.

I tie a smallmouth jig that uses the rump feathers of a pheasant, the jig is brown over orange buck tail with a single pheasant rump feather tied in hackle style as a collar. The teal hues on it gives a natural appearance to the jig but tying a jig with pheasant feathers as a main component is not for me, there really isn't much action to be gained from it. I use pheasant tail fibers to  tie in as the mouth parts of a craw on my craw jigs, it also adds a little bulk but again, not really used for action. Marabou make a great jig and can be tied a number of different ways, I'd post a pic but photobucket doesn't work here anymore, but that is what I would do, pheasant isn't a great material to tie with unless you are tying small flies.

The only things that I have really used them for is gill accents on streamers and the arms of crafish flies. I agree with the above posts about using maribu instead.
