drop shot questions

Featured Replies

fished a drop shot rig yesterday for the first time and i cannot believe the fish i caught. can you drop shot artists steer me in the right direction as far as technique and terminal tackle goes. i was using 30# braid with a gama affset round bend hook with a slender sluggo above a simple 1/4 oz casting weight. i was casting along a tree line and i caught a couple of good ones. i know there has to be a better way and i would love to hear your styles. thanks in advance.

I use 20lb braid with a 12-14lb fluoro leader connected via an Alberto knot. I've been using the Owner Wacky/Drop Shot hooks. Either a #1 or 1/0. 1/4 oz is usually plenty for me. If the wind starts blowing (like it has been lately), I'll move up to a 3/8. The small Lake Fork Magic Shad in Tilapia is almost like using live bait when you nose hook it. I've caught so many fish on that little chunk of plastic it isn't even funny. Bass Magic Shakey tails in silver shad are a great minnow mimic. Otherwise, almost any small plastic worm will work. Wacky rigging a Senko can be really fun also. Most of the time you don't need to do much, just the movement of the boat will give the lure enough action. Otherwise, just a few small pops of the rod tip, let it sink to the bottom, and repeat.

By the way, it can be a nasty rig worked on heavier gear on the outside edges of mats.  Just up-size the line, rod, and weight.  Great for bedding fish too.

20lb braid, 10lb leader on spinning tackle.  Gammy dropshot hook (#1).  Lure can be most any soft plastic, but I've been using 4" shakey worms with good success.  I leave the weight on the bottom while working the rod tip, moving after a bit.  Love hookin' 'em smack in the old eye tooth.

My favorite plastic on a drop shot is a fluke (baby bass). I went out this morning and nailed them with this setup...

I actually had a 5+ lber on the sucker spit the hook!! >:)

The more time you spend fishing a drop shot, the more time you'll figure out places to fish it, and tackle to fish it with.  It's just a very versatile rig.   Rig it on spinning gear or bait casting gear, from light to heavy.  This year my most consistent rig was a flipping stick, 20 lb fluorocarbon and a half ounce drop shot weight.

I use a Daiwa Sol 2000 with 15lb braid and an 8lb leader of P-line CXX "IF" its open water. If not,,I use a Daiwa Sol Baitcaster with 30lb braid with a 17lb CXX leader. I like Zoom Flukes for drop shotting. I also have been using the Standout Hooks for the past year with good results.

You really can't fish a drop shot rig wrong. I fish a lot of gin clear water, so I use 6 lb FC on spinning gear most of the time with finesse worms, flukes, grubs, etc with 1/8 oz weights. However, I came through a big bait ball recently and didn't have any spoons, so I threw on a 1/2 oz sinker, threw on a small fluke, and had some good action jigging it through the school.
