Need A Reel

Featured Replies

Gonna buy a reel for my 7'1 ***. Had pretty much decided on a Lews tournament mg or bb-1. But after reading so many great reviews about the BPS pro qualifier thought about giving it try just don't want to be disappointed. I have a couple of revo s just wanted to try something different and maybe save a few dollars. So many great reels to choose from in the 100 to 150 dollar range, its hard to choose. Thanks

if you are planning on casting for distance get the bb1 but if you are doing bottom contact get the MG at least that what I would do.

Have you given any thought to the Diawa tatula?

The gentleman I bought my 7'3" MF *** from said they balanced well with an Alphas size reel.  I mounted a Purple Alphas on mine.  It makes for a fine casting combo, but I will be switching the reel out next season as I have a nicer rod for the Alphas.

I don't have either of the Lews you mentioned, but I do have a Tournament Pro.  Some have suggested not buying a magnetic only Lews.  I couldn't say...not having any experience with mag only Lews.  I will say I have quite a few Daiwas and a couple mag only Gen 1 Abus, and don't feel handicapped.

The reels you are looking at all hold a little more line than the average b/c reel.  Do you need that much line?  I ask because the Tournament Pro can be had new for around your upper limit with some searching, has dual brakes and is lighter than the 3 you listed.

The BPS PQ is a great reel for the price. When you want to go low it is about the top of the list, also for $50.00 (Even less on sale) The Academy H2o Mettle is a great reel. If I was wanting to spend in the $100-$150 range though it would be either a Daiwa Tatula or a lew's BB1 or Tournament. You can buy the Lew's Tournament for around $120 if you look around and it has a dual breaking system that I find to be much better than the Lew's tournament MG with the single Mag break. I hope this helps.
