Finally we're getting some warm weather so I'm going to check out a few local ponds to see if I can get a couple first fish of the season. Unfortunately we just had that snow storm so I'm not sure how active the fish will be even with the warm temps this week. Any suggestions about how to fish ponds this time of year would be greatly appreciated. I do have an idea of what I'm going to do but I'd like to cross check my plan with what some of you more experienced bass-fisherman would do.

Blue/black jigs have been very successful for my fishing buddy during the VA winter.

Ah yes, the home of Longwood College and that big furniture store.

 

OK, here is my two cents about this Saturday:

1.  We are going to get clobbered with rain on Friday meaning a cold front is moving through the area.

2.  Saturday will be a beautiful day with nice blue skies.

3.  The bass will eat their hearts out on Friday and not be hungry on Saturday.

4.  You will have to aggravate them into hitting your baits, be on the bottom or via the water column with a moving bait.

5.  You can throw anything you want to try to get them to hit it.

6.  Bottom baits like Shaky Head, Drop Shots and jigs/pigs.

7.  Moving baits like lipless crankbaits, think sized bladed crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swim jigs.

8.  Lighten up on your line test and bait size.

9.  Fish slow and be patient.

10. Try shallow; all wood and grass you can find; piers and docks; in the sun; along the north and western banks throw parallel to the bank; throw out and reel in back to the bank in a fan pattern; and try to find anything that can hold heat to warm the water a few degrees.

11. Have your needle nose pliers with you just in case you do catch something along with your polarized sun glasses.

12. With all that said above who knows? They may want a fat KVD 2.5 or a thin Norman or a nice Zoom trick worm on a shaky head or a Roboworm on a drop shot.

 

Just take your spinning gear with the lightest line you can put on your rod and reel and hit the water early and fish all day.
