Help Me Pick A Rod To Round Out My 3 Combos

Featured Replies

Hello,

This year will be my first full season of fishing and I am looking to buy another rod to round out my setups heading into the season.  This season I will be fishing a private lake in eastern PA and it will be my first real fishing in years.  I went out a few times at the end of last year with my 20-year old gear and got really excited about enjoying time on the water fishing.  I will do most of my fishing off my pontoon boat. Here is what I have heading into the year

Setup #1

- Old Ugly Stick spinning rod

- New Abu Garcia Cardinal spinning reel

- Line (not set on this yet)

For my second and third setups, I have two new Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier reels (6.4:1 and 7.1:1 speeds).  I also have a new BP Johnny Morris Carbonlite trigger bait casting rod (Med/Fast, 7' long) which will be used with one of the PQ reels.

So, I am looking for another rod to finish up my three combos to start the season.  I have some mono and braided line (Power Pro) and plan to get some fluorocarbon to try as well.  I am not set on fishing styles or baits as I'll be trying many things out this year.  I really liked using a popper last year with the old gear so I'll keep on using a popper and will try some frogs.  I also bought quite a few crankbaits as well (several of the popular selections on Bass Pro).

Can you recommend a new rod for me to purchase in the $100-$200 range to give me a balanced setup heading into the year and which reel should I pair with each rod.  I am not tied to specific brand names so I'll consider all options.

Thank you.

St croix mojo bass either spinnerbait or slop n frog both would work well for jigs frogs etc

There are better rods in the 100-200 range but I use my 7ftmh mojo bass spinnerbait model more than any other rod I own( except my dobyns rods) . Its an all around great rod and can do anything you want it to. Put the 6:4 on the carbon lite rod and the 7:1 on the mojo. Also the 7ftmh fenwick aetos is a beast of a rod.

I suggested it because if he could save a 100 dollars by going with the mojo and then having a hundred dollars to put forwards another combo or lures tackle etc..

Thanks for all the feedback and recommendations.  Right now, i am leaning toward going with the 7' MH Mojo Bass spinnerbait model and putting my 7.1:1 PQ on this rod as mentioned above.

If I use these three combos, does my tackle get used as follows?

- Crankbaits and swimbaits on the Carbonlite rod with 6.4:1

- Topwater poppers, frogs, and spooks on the Mojo Bass spinnerbait with the 7.1:1

Sorry for the rookies questions but as I mentioned, I am just getting started in this adventure.

Carbonlite Combo - Crankbaits, and swim /jigs/jigs/texas rigs up to 1/2 oz

Mojo Bass - Spinnerbait, heavier plastics, swimbaits, frog and topwater

Okay, so a month or so ago I couldn't help myself and on an impulse picked up a second Mojo Bass.  This time I added the MBC79HF for an A-Rig rod with a 6.4:1 BPS PQ baitcaster.  Not getting much luck fishing with the a-rig, can so I use this rod for something else?  Could this rod do double duty and serve as my frogging rod?  It seems a bit big and I should have bought something a little more versatile for my 4th rod in my arsenal.

FWIW, I have the reel filled with Power Pro 65lbs braid.

Thanks!
