Possibly moving down to Florida in the next year, couple job opportunities are in either West Palm area and Port Charlotte/ Punta Gorda.

I've only spent time in Naples, where there's ponds and canal everywhere. From the looking of it, West Palm area is similar. Looking at the map though, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda look alot different freshwater wise.

Are there any real opportunities for freshwater in those areas compared to West Palm?

Not much.  But fair bass fishing is a quick drive away.  Most local ponds and lakes are posted. Even DOT retention ponds are getting posted now.  Saltwater is the game here but there is access through county parks to a few freshwater canal systems.  The 2 local rivers turn shallow as they get sweeter.  Kayak, Gheenoe and jon boat territory.  Webb/Babcock Wildlife Management Area has a managed lake system.
