Kayak Rooftopping Question

Featured Replies

I am planning on buying a Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game II or a Predator MX.
Both are quite heavy and I will be loading it on to the roof my sedan on my own.
It fits the Thule LB50 (50" load bar) and I am commited to Thule products only.

Here are the options I've come up with.

Option 1
Slipstream, for when I'm on my own
Glid and set for a guests boat

Option 2
2 Hull a port pro's
Outrigger II, for loading solo

With option 1, I'm not certain two boats will fit on the 50" inch load bars in the flat position. The other question I have is how the extendable roll bar will work on a sedan as opposed to an SUV or hatchback vehicle.

With option 2, I'm sure I can get my kayak loaded on to the roof with outrigger load assist bar. But I am not sure I will then be able to get it lifted from the load bars and into the J hooks.

If anyone can comment on my concerns or provide other advice or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Another option. Yakima make a "boat bar" that you use with their round bars. Makes single handed loading very easy. Look on YouTube. There are a few vids on it. Todd

Same as the outrigger.

you said sedan so the roof height isnt like a truck with a rack. I do have issues getting my T13 into the J racks on my Ford Ranger 4x4 with a rack. I have shoulder issues tho. So, Im thinking that you can do it if no shoulder issues. I use a J rack for my 2nd yak if I have someone else going. Otherwise I lay mine upside down flat on the cross bars which are covered in large pool noodles that are wrapped with plumbers tape. The slide out load bar should make it a breeze for you.

I also find that you need to lay a piece of carpet, or better a piece of rubber floor mat, on the ground for the other end of the yak while loading. When you pick up the front the rear slides. The rubber keeps it from sliding out on you and protects the plastic from the concrete or ground.

I think you make a good point. The lower height of the sedan should make moving the kayak once on the roof much easier. I think I will go with 2 hull a ports and the outrigger. I believe that is the cheaper option as well.
