I have an HDS-7 on the console and a 5 by the trolling motor with structure scan...  I just purchased the 7 and moved the 5 near my trolling motor, both units run off the transducers near the transom.  For some reason my chart starts to spin around in circles on my hds-5 and I have no idea where my actual way point is or where the ledge I'm trying to fish is...  Does anyone have a fix for this?  I was reading online and it sounds like you can uncheck a box that says something about north up??  Anyone had this problem and does anyone know if the north up fixes it??  Haven't had the boat back on the water to test the north up fix.  

You have the Navigation set up on Course Up--that keeps what is ahead of you when navigating at the top of the screen . To keep it from doing that, set it to North Up.

The satellites are in constant motion. When you are not moving fast enough for the unit to determine what direction you are going, the satellite movement makes the unit "think" you are going somewhere you are not.

 

Once you do the North Up setting and you are still, the position curser will wander around like a drunk sailor.

 

It takes consecutive track points in a certain direction in a certain amount of time for the unit to determine direction.

In addition to Map Orientation settings (Course/Heading Up vs. North Up), part of your problem could also be due to your units losing sense of direction when you are either moving very slowly or not at all.  Adding the Point-1 antenna with built-in heading sensor would completely fix that.  The Point-1 is a NMEA 2000 device, so you would also need a NMEA 2000 starter kit if you don't already have this network installed.

Thats when I normally see the issue Todd, when I'm up on the trolling motor and not moving very fast....  I mark a few way points on the hds 7 which is at my console and then go up to the 5 and attempt to cast towards the way point but it is near impossible...  I'm going to try north up and see if that fixes the issue...  Todd you will probably know the answer to this question...  When I mark waypoints and turn on range rings(I think thats what its called, the little circles that help tell me how far something is), what are the intervals of the circles???  How many feet??

The range rings are spaced according to the scale shown at the bottom right and the Zoom level affects that.
