Hello more knowledgeable crowd than I,

 

I'm coming into bass fishing from a mostly trolling for walleye background, and decided I needed a good bait-casting setup. As I'm in school right now, don't have a lot of funds, so I'm trying to get a good all around rod until I can broaden my collection. My reel right now is a left hand retrieve Abu Garcia Silver Max. I kind of narrowed it down to a Duckett Ghost, but don't know if I should get the 6' 10" Medium action or the 6'8" MH. Trying to keep in mind that this rod has to be able to do a majority of things, from jigs to rattle traps to T-rigged plastics... sooooo much stuff out there.  If you have any suggestions (different rod etc) I'm definitely open to them.

Since your personal best is #1-2 I'd think a medium action would be fine. I think your SC is awesome for a guy just getting into bass fishing. lol.

Well....I AM trying to improve that. That was an accidental largemouth while pond fishing for panfish   but I caught one!

Personal best size has nothing to do with the action of a rod I would go with a 7 mh-fast action rod. For brand I would go either St croix and their mojo bass series it's the spinnerbait stick and is the most versatile rod in my arsenal. I rip rattle traps through grass with them and fish all kinds of other baits on them. The other rod would be a *** black p. that rod has been getting mad reviews for sensitivity and power and may be the next new rod I get in the same action. The silver max will work good on the mojo.

Either one would work. But a MH/F is usually considered a good all-around bass rod.

Thanks Andrew, appreciate it. Was looking at the the 13 for my second choice, they are both in my price range, I guess I just need to go play around with the *** and see how it feels, because I played around with the Duckett and the local shop was nice enough to let me put my reel on it and take some practice casts.

My first rod was a BPS extreme 6'6" MH fast action rod and it was the perfect all around rod for learning multiple setups. Plus I think I got it on sale but I can't remember the exact price I paid for it. Its still sitting with my other rods, just doesn't have a reel on it right now. 

I have a 7'1" MH/F *** and I love it. The grip has a slightly different profile from what I would consider 'normal', but I have quickly come to like it. I use it for plastic and jigs but even as an all-around rod, I would highly recommend it.

That all being said, my next rod is a St. Croix Mojo Bass glass rod for crankbaits.

I actually fished with an *** the other day, the tip was broken off of it because of a mishap my buddy had. The sensitivity was pretty excellent granted it was a Medium Light spinning rod and I was using a drop shot rig so I don't really have any experience with the bait casting rods. If you are going to go with a Duckett I would go with the Micro Magics, they are pretty excellent rods and the sensitivity is great. I just got my new Finesse setup last week, a Dobyns Champion 702sf, and have to say that for the people out there that say expensive rods aren't worth the money or they can get the same feel with a rod that costs half the price haven't ever fished with one. Also after using the Dobyns rod I may be trying to switch all my setups over! The biggest thing for me with anything I buy is that you are going to get what you pay for, so I will spend the extra cash to have nicer stuff. 

Another thing to remember on buying a rod is warranty I know from personal experience that St Croix has an excellent warranty program I can testify along with countless other members here. I don't know about *** so someone else will have to fit in here. What is your price range exactly?

$50-$150 is bout the range. Parents kind of cut it off after that. Even though its my money I would be spending, they're not used to paying more than 30 bucks for a mediocre spinning rod, so they didn't want me going overboard and buying a $450 loomis.

I would seriously consider that Croix I suggested then for 110 it really is an awesome stick and if your willing to buy used a whole other class of rods come into view you could definitely find an Avid in that price. Plus you don't want to get one of those loomis rods anyway a legend extreme would go nice lol just kidding lol. pm me if you like I'm in the same sort of situation as you

Thanks Andrew, the couple of local shops don carry them, but I haven't been to the BPS down in Mesa, so hopefully I'll hit that this weekend and get to play around with one. Thanks so much for all your help guys!

True. But I don't have huge bass here either, personal best is 5lbs I think and I use medium rods. Just ordered a H. Thinking about returning it for a medium.

I have a silver max as well and just bought a 71 med *** black as my everything rod. Unfortunately I have not gotten to fish it yet. Still on back order. Just letting you know what someone in the same situation decided on. And if u wait there's gonna be memorial day sales so u could get the *** black for $85
