Best Reel Type For Braid Line?

Featured Replies

I would like to have braid line on one of my rods. Tried it on an old casting reel and it barely casts and ends up in a tangle almost every time. Can anyone tell me if a spinning reel would give me better results and be more likely to avoid the braid-line bird-nest tangles?  Thanks!

First off, many people use braid on baitcasters without a problem, so your problem was either operator error or using too thin line. What lb test were you using?

And secondly, you can use braid on spinning gear. Just as with any other line, tangles are less likely.

Thanks, guys.

Probably my problem is "operator error" or, possibly, the old reel has lost its ability to smoothly release the line, like it needs , a much heavier bait or plug to pull out the line. Think I'll just switch to one of my spinning reels and see if I can cast it without tangling the braid.

Take the side plates off of that old reel and clean the old grease out of it, relube it and make sure the brake adjustment is clean and works smooth.  They aren't the easiest thing to cast with, but they will work.

X2.  And if it is an older reel with no brakes, then you better be very, very good with your thumb.

Also check out the stickies on setting up a baitcaster correctly and on how to cast with a baitcaster.  Heavier spool tension and excess brakes help eliminate backlashes, but create their own set of problems.  Spool tension and brakes set too high are bad for casting light lures.  One problem being you won't get any distance therefore causing you to over-power the cast...not a good thing unless you are reasonably experienced.

I have no idea of your experience with a b/c reel, but if they are a recent addition to your fishing experience, then "easy does it" is a good place to start.  :eyebrows:

Also make sure the lure weight is within the rating for the rod.  Trying to cast a 1/4 oz. lure on a rod that won't load below 3/8 oz. is an exercise in frustration.
