Spybaits -- Worth It?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

That's the question.  Are spybaits worth buying?  Even more importantly, do they do what they say?

Josh

Absolutely.

Read this post about my first outing with the Duo Realis Spin Bait 80 and then go to YouTube and watch the 15 videos about this weird looking little wonder bait.

After using it for 1 season, I realized that this bait truly is capable of putting fish in the boat. They compare this bait as the hard version of a jig and twister.

IMO the whole hype around it was so big because the bait companies realized that no one in North America had one, and it was a great opportunity to cash out on it.

I've only been using it a short time and generally in tough conditions when my bigger baits are striking out. That said it's a fish catcher, I've stuck a few Bluegills & Crappie with it for some multispecies  fun. I like how it wobbles on the fall almost like a hardbait version of the Senko. I'm definitely intrigued  and will experiment more with this bait .

Thanks folks.

I grew up with Dad having a lot of Japanese business friends/associates.  One, Mosaki, was pretty cool, spoke pretting decent English, and didn't mind sparring with an American country boy who did martial arts as a hobby.  (He also didn't mind winning, dammit!)

Musashi and Marie were a bit older, but Musashi loved guns and couldn't have them in Japan.  They also had us over for traditional meals.  This is when I realized I love raw sea bass.

Seeing the precision at which these folks did everything, I didn't figure the Japanese would release anything without perfecting it.  It's a matter of honor.

My next question is, are these ultralight only?  I have UL, M, and MH rigs.  Nothing light.

These things are spendy for me, so I'm doing my research!

Thanks again,

Josh

I have tried it and here is what I can tell you, if you are fishing stained water with less than 4' visibility then forget it. I put these in jerkbait category in that they are visual, they are subtle and don't displace much water so the fish have to be able to see them at distance, in dirty water you have to hit the fish in the head for it to find the bait. I also don't recommend anything over 6lb. line, I tried it with 10lb and then 8lb because I wasn't after fish, I wanted to see how the bait reacted with different size lines and everything I read said to use light line. Well what I read was true, when you see the bait on 6lb line and then watch it on 8 and 10, you notice a dramatic difference, and I say it is dramatic as when it would sink on those lines there was zero movement while the light line lets it roll and shimmy on the fall and it also has a gentle rocking action on the retrieve but not with 8lb line. The last thing is you need to be in a boat with a depth finder and fish in areas where you are marking fish or at lest marking cover or structure that will hold fish, you can get lucky and get a cruising bass out from the bank but there are better baits for that. So, if you have clear water and know of off shore structure and cover that holds fish then by all means give it a try, personally I have only caught 2 bass like this and I find it boring because I used it wrong, I was trying to search for fish with it as I was determined to use it and of course I hauled a lot of water but I did come to realize that it isn't for everyone, your results may be different.
