I just started pouring my own worms not long ago.  One problem that have noticed is I will tend to get air bubbles after I poured the worm.  This happens more so when I try to pour two colored worms.  any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have hand poured thousands of worms over the years. But I am not sure why you are getting air bubbles, I have never seen that before. I have purposly agitated the plastic as much as I can to try and get bubbles in the plastic so that they would float.

When your pouring two colored baits, are the two layers coming apart? Is that the problem your having?

I had the same problem, and I think you might be pouring to fast. When you pour fast the hot plastic doesn't have enought time to effectively settle and fill the entire mold. Try slowing down, and see what that does.

I had that problem with a batch of plastic. I was told that I was not mixing it enough. I mixed the heck out of it and still the same problem. I ordered a new jug of plastic, no more bubbles. I have heard that sometimes you will just get a bad batch.

ok guys, i have a question for those of you who are "pouring your own."

do you pour them to get a certain color/size, etc.,, or, is it just cheaper to pour your own?

I pour mainly to use up all my previously torn plastics, but I will make some specail colors. Its fun catching something that you made, even if its only soft plastics.

yeah it is fun catching fish on something you created.

Thanks for the help guys.  I will have to try pouring slower.  I am sending a worm to lurecraft to show them what it is doing.  If it is a bad batch of plastic maybe they will get me a new one.  Haha I dought it , but I'll see what happens.   ;D

I don't pour anymore, but when I did, it was to get some grubs that were not commercially available.

I pour my own as a hobby. Its great making your own baits and experimenting with colors and styles.

I fish a lot of clear water here in the N.W. Hand pours seem to make a difference on tough days.

All of the above and such variables such as softness/hardness, salt content, design shape, texture, action, weight/floatation, uniqueness, durability, convenience of not having to order/backorder, less unit cost per bait (Senko @ 65 cents - your own, 7 cents!), being able to copy many baits or come up with your own designs and mold them in plaster.

I always get a big kick out of catching fish on lures I've made. Makes me feel far less dependent on the big companies and allows me to extend my hobby into a creative activity, stimulated by imagination. Beats watching the boob tube on a cold winter's night !!

Moister in either the colorant or plastic can cause bubbles to appear.  I have found this out from pouring my own worms in a extreamly high humidity environment, back porch in Florida, and then moving my pouring operation to an area that had a dehumidifier, my basement in Indiana.  Bear this in mind though, there are times that I do like having bubbles in my worms.  It can cause the worm to float higher off the bottom, or fall at a slower rate when finess fishing.  With either case, those worms can be deadly when drop shotting or on the Carolina rig.

A follow-up to the bubble problem. If you are using Calhoun plastic, it was recently found that bad batches went out from the factory and that an additive is available from Delmart that should take care of the problem. I pour in a damp basement and never had bubbles until last summer. I got a free sample from M-F and had absolutely no bubbles! Moisture is not the problem!

Reheating bad plastic will get the bubbles out, wasting electricity, which is the reason I switched to M-F. Until Del tests the newest batch in two weeks, I'll stay with M-F. (note: if clear plastic turns amber on 3 reheats, it's defective.)
