Which Kayak

Featured Replies

So I think I have narrowed it down for my first kayak.  There aren't any decent used kayaks on Craigslist in my area so I will be getting a new one.  I have three options that  I am considering: a Perception Scout from Academy, Perception Stryker from Dicks Sporting Goods, or a Pescador.

The scout is a somewhat hybrid boat, its a sit on top but you sit a little lower to the water line.  There are no scupper holes which makes me a little nervous.  Its a little longer at 12' than the Stryker at 11.5.  But also a little narrower at 30.75in  vs 33.  I would like to try standing at times and at 6'2 235lbs I wonder if that little bit of stability loss would make a huge difference.

Then you have the pescador that everyone says is a great starter boat.  I cant demo the Scout or Stryker for sure but not sure about the pescador.  Any thoughts from my fellow kayak folks? Thanks for your time!

No experience with the Scout but... I paddled the Stryker, Its a barge. Its big and heavy. Its definitely stable, if that's your main concern, you may like it. The Pescador is popular and it is what it is... The old WS Tarpon. You cant go wrong but it may not fit what you want and leave you wanting more. My Tarpon honestly did that with me. I got it and wanted to be able to stand. What kind of water are you looking to fish?

Another one to consider. The F&S Eagle Talon at Dick's. I ended up with one in the end and really like it. You would want to upgrade the seat so take that into consideration regarding price. Its a great platform though. Its definitely faster and tracks better than the Stryker and though much slower than the Tarpon/Pescador, it is much more stable. I can and do stand and fish in mine. Plus it comes pretty well rigged and ready to fish. Included rod holders, anchor trolley, anchor and the like.  They are made by Moken for what that's worth.

I'll be fishing the TN river, Hiawassee r and the lakes on those rivers and maybe some ponds.
