Can't Catch A Fish On This River!

Featured Replies

Like the title says I have tried everything and cannot seem to get a bite. Its the Grand River located in Shelburne/Grand Valley Ontario Canada for those near. Its pretty rocky with some weed growth, mostly lily pads. I see a lot of big carp swimming around and I am wondering if they drive the bass away? I see fish hitting lily pads, not sure if there bass or carp. I have fished with tubes, spinners, jigs, senkos, topwater, crankbaits. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?? I fish this river 3-5 times a week and have not caught a fish in a long time. I know there is fish in there though.

I fish the grand river all the time. The carp you see swimming around are spawning, they rarely feed during this, and yes, I have found that they will drive the bass away. Haven't fished many pads there, but if you see fish blowing up on the pads, throw a frog in there and see what happens. I would try using inline spinners, they work great on the rock bass and smallies. One of the most important things that you can do on this river, is find the clear water. I have always caught more fish in the clear water. So pretty much clear water+Spinner= fish. Also, after a rain, try a small popper. They work great. I can also PM you some spots on the Grand that have been the most productive for me.

Hi, thanks for the reply! If you wouldn't mind PMing a couple spots, that'd be greatly appreciated. I'll definitely try a spinner in clear water. It just rained and I'm about to head out so I'll try my luck with a popper too.

Take a 3" Senko and rig it on a small jig head, 1/16oz to maybe 1/8oz at the heaviest with a small size #2 or #1 hook. Cast it to the outside edge of weeds and don't move it much, let it hit the bottom and pick it up and drop it again and repeat this until it gets back to the boat or to the shore. I fish river Smallmouth a lot and the 3" Senko on a small ball head jig is hard to beat when the fish aren't in a feeding mode.

Thanks, I'll give that a go, having fished Senko's a lot wacky rigged and texas rigged I can't say I have too much confidence in it at this point though.
