Any Metro Area Bank Fishers Out There?

Featured Replies

I'm newer to the Metro area fishing scene and would like peoples' input on the best waters in the area. I am one of the 'less fortunate' guys that is limited to bank fishing nearly every outing. This summer I've been to Wehrspann, Walnut Creek, Standing Bear, Lawrence Youngman, Zorinsky, Cunningham, Papio D-4, Prairie View, and Wanahoo. I know of a few master anglers this year out of Wehrspann--but not from the bank, of course. I myself have landed one just short of a master angler earlier this summer at Standing Bear (19", 4.5lbs). Other than that, however, I haven't had much success at all. I realize that some might say it's just a tougher time to fish in the middle of summer; but I've also read that there are still ways to produce decent fish with changes in techniques, depths, and lures. I'm not looking for anyone's "secret" spot by any means. I'm just looking for some tips on the best waters in the Metro area for me to spend my time at on the bank. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Also, as I said before-I'm newer to the Omaha area. If anyone is interested in a fishing partner, I'm always anxious to grab the gear and go!

First, welcome to the forums from another Nebraskan. Omaha is a cool town. A lot of smaller lakes to fish and plenty of other things to do too. Just yesterday actually I was looking to see how many Ne anglers were on here, and we are pretty few and far between.

I have fished some of the lakes you mentioned at one time or another over the years but haven't fished many of them this year or last. I have fished Wanahoo a once this year. I fish from boat so my experience might be different from yours but I seem to remember Wehrspahn having several main lake points. I would start on some of those. Some of them I think tapered from shore pretty quickly too, so they would be good for bank fishing. I caught a bunch of bass along the dam at Wanahoo in March but haven't been back since. I do know that along the campground there is some deeper water, so you might try there.

If I ever get back up there with my boat one of these days, I'll shoot you a PM. Good luck.

Summoner,

Thanks for the welcome! You are right about the scarcity of NE anglers on here. The closer bodies of water to me are Standing Bear, Prairie View, and Youngman; but I think almost every outing would be more productive heading to Wehrspann like you mentioned. Thanks for the info on Wanahoo.

Have a good one!
